# Stretching Calorie Calculator

> A 155 lb person burns about 40 calories in 15 minutes of gentle stretching and about 162 in a full hour. Active mobility moves raise that to about 49 in 15 minutes. Stretching burns little, but a few minutes a day improves flexibility.

## How it works

Calories = MET × body weight (kg) × hours, using 2024 Adult Compendium codes 02101 (mild stretching, 2.3 MET), 02140 (light yoga or stretching video, 2.5), and 02024 (light calisthenics, 2.8). Net calories remove 1 kcal per kg per hour of resting burn.

## How many calories does stretching burn?

A 155 lb person burns about 40 calories in 15 minutes of gentle stretching, 81 in 30 minutes, and 162 in an hour. Active mobility moves raise the 15-minute figure to about 49.

Those figures use the 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities, which rates mild stretching at 2.3 MET, a light stretching video at 2.5, and light calisthenics at 2.8. Resting burn is 1 MET, so gentle stretching adds about 1.3 MET, or about 23 kcal in 15 minutes for a 155 lb person.

## Stretching calories by type and body weight

Each value is a 15-minute total, a common length for a stretching routine. Double it for 30 minutes.

*Calories burned in 15 minutes of stretching (2024 Compendium METs)*

| Stretching type | MET | 125 lb | 155 lb | 185 lb |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Gentle static stretching | 2.3 | 33 | 40 | 48 |
| Follow-along stretching video | 2.5 | 35 | 44 | 52 |
| Active or dynamic moves | 2.8 | 40 | 49 | 59 |

## How the calculator works

Calories = MET × body weight in kg × hours. A MET is the energy cost of an activity as a multiple of resting burn, which is about 1 kcal per kg per hour. Net calories subtract that resting burn to show what the stretching added. Worked example: a 170 lb person (77.1 kg) does 20 minutes of gentle static stretching. Calories = 2.3 × 77.1 × 0.333 = about 59 kcal, and net calories are about 33 kcal.

## How much stretching improves flexibility

A 2025 meta-analysis of 189 studies with 6,654 adults found static stretching improved flexibility, with a moderate effect after one session and a large effect after weeks of training. Gains stopped growing past about 4 minutes of stretching per session and 10 minutes per week. Adults who started out less flexible improved the most.

A 2024 meta-analysis of 77 studies found static stretching and PNF, a contract-then-relax method, increased range of motion more than ballistic or dynamic stretching. Volume, intensity, and frequency made no clear difference. Women gained more range than men.

Stretching also changes the muscle. A 2023 meta-analysis found 3 to 12 weeks of static stretching gave a moderate drop in muscle stiffness.

## Stretching, blood pressure, and blood sugar

In an 8-week trial, 40 adults with high-normal blood pressure or stage 1 hypertension either stretched or walked briskly for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Sitting systolic pressure fell from 146 to 140 mm Hg in the stretching group and went from 139 to 142 in the walking group.

In a trial of 51 adults with type 2 diabetes, 60 minutes of passive static stretching lowered blood sugar after a meal as much as 60 minutes of resistance exercise.

Stretching has limits. A network meta-analysis of 118 trials in chronic low back pain found every exercise type tested reduced pain except stretching.

## Does stretching count as exercise?

Stretching does not count toward the 150 weekly minutes of moderate aerobic activity or the 2 days of muscle-strengthening work that adults need. At 2.3 to 2.8 MET it is light activity, and the calculator reports it that way. Treat stretching as an add-on to walking, cycling, or lifting. A few minutes after each workout covers the dose that improved flexibility in trials.

## FAQ

### How many calories does stretching burn?

For a 155 lb (70 kg) person: about 40 kcal in 15 minutes of gentle stretching, 81 kcal in 30 minutes, and 162 kcal in an hour. About 1.3 MET of that is above resting, so 15 minutes adds about 23 kcal beyond sitting still.

### How many calories does 10 minutes of stretching burn?

About 27 kcal for a 155 lb person doing gentle holds and about 33 kcal for active mobility moves. At 125 lb the gentle figure is about 22 kcal and at 185 lb about 32 kcal.

### How long should you stretch to get more flexible?

Less than most people think. A 2025 meta-analysis of 189 studies found flexibility gains stopped growing past about 4 minutes of static stretching per session and 10 minutes per week. People who started out less flexible gained the most.

### Is static or dynamic stretching better?

For long-term range of motion, static stretching and PNF (contract-relax) stretching beat ballistic and dynamic stretching in a meta-analysis of 77 studies. Dynamic moves burn a bit more and work well as a warm-up.

### Can stretching lower blood pressure?

One trial suggests it can. Forty adults with high-normal blood pressure or stage 1 hypertension stretched or walked briskly for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, for 8 weeks. Sitting systolic pressure fell from 146 to 140 mm Hg with stretching and did not fall with walking.

### Does stretching lower blood sugar?

In people with type 2 diabetes, it can after a meal. In a trial of 51 adults, 60 minutes of passive static stretching lowered post-meal blood sugar as much as 60 minutes of resistance exercise.
