# TDEE vs BMR Calculator: Maintenance Calories Explained

> BMR estimates calories burned at complete rest. TDEE adds daily activity and equals maintenance calories. Use BMR as a baseline; use TDEE to set eating targets.

## Summary

Basal metabolic rate (BMR) and total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) both describe calorie burn, but at different scopes. BMR covers the minimum energy needed for vital functions at rest. TDEE adds all daily movement, digestion, and exercise on top of that baseline.

Confusing the two leads to eating too little or too much. A BMR of 1,600 kcal is not your maintenance budget unless you stay in bed all day. Multiplying BMR by an activity factor produces TDEE, which most diet plans use as the starting point.

*BMR as a share of TDEE in sedentary adults. The rest is movement, exercise, and the energy cost of digesting food. A bed-rest day is not this split.*

BMR / Everything else in the day

- Lower end of the usual range: 60% BMR, 40% Everything else in the day
- Upper end of the usual range: 75% BMR, 25% Everything else in the day

*TDEE vs BMR comparison*

| | BMR | TDEE |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Definition | Calories at complete rest | Total calories burned in 24 hours |
| Includes activity | No | Yes (NEAT, exercise, thermic effect of food) |
| Typical share of TDEE | 60 to 75% in sedentary adults | 100% of daily expenditure |
| Best for | Understanding resting metabolism | Setting maintenance, deficit, or surplus calories |
| How calculated | Predictive equation (e.g. Mifflin-St Jeor) | BMR × activity multiplier |

## When to use BMR

Use a BMR calculator when you want to know how many calories your body burns before any deliberate activity. BMR represents energy for breathing, circulation, brain function, cell repair, and thermoregulation at rest.

BMR is useful for comparing resting metabolism across time after weight loss, during aging, or when evaluating whether a very low calorie intake falls below your resting needs. Chronic intake below BMR can suppress thyroid hormone and lean mass retention in some individuals.

Clinical and research settings measure BMR under strict conditions: overnight fast, morning timing, supine rest, and controlled temperature. Predictive equations approximate that value from weight, height, age, and sex with roughly 10 percent error for most people.

## When to use TDEE

Use a TDEE calculator when you need a daily calorie target for weight maintenance, fat loss, or muscle gain. TDEE equals BMR plus non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT), exercise activity thermogenesis (EAT), and the thermic effect of food (TEF).

Standard activity multipliers range from 1.2 for sedentary desk work to 1.9 for hard daily training or physical labor. A person with 1,600 kcal BMR and a 1.55 multiplier (moderately active) has an estimated TDEE near 2,480 kcal.

Weight change follows energy balance over weeks. A deficit of 500 kcal per day below TDEE typically produces about one pound of fat loss per week, though individual response varies with adherence, water shifts, and metabolic adaptation.

## BMR vs RMR: a related distinction

Resting metabolic rate (RMR) is often used interchangeably with BMR in fitness apps, but RMR is measured under less restrictive conditions and runs roughly 10 percent higher than true BMR. Most online calculators labeled BMR actually predict RMR or use equations validated against RMR data.

For practical diet planning the distinction rarely changes your strategy. Pick one equation, apply a consistent activity factor, and adjust intake based on scale trend over two to four weeks.

If you know lean body mass from a body fat estimate, the Katch-McArdle equation can refine BMR further because muscle tissue is more metabolically active than fat tissue per kilogram.

## How BMR and TDEE work together

The standard workflow is BMR first, TDEE second, target third. Calculate BMR, multiply by your activity level, then subtract 300 to 500 kcal for moderate fat loss or add 200 to 300 kcal for lean gain.

NEAT often explains why two people with identical BMR and gym routines maintain weight on different calories. Steps, fidgeting, and standing desk time can swing daily burn by several hundred calories without structured exercise.

Recalculate after every 10 to 15 pounds of weight change because lighter bodies burn fewer calories at rest and during movement.

## Limitations and adjustment

All BMR and TDEE values are estimates. Genetic factors, thyroid status, medications, sleep debt, and menstrual cycle phase alter real expenditure. Treat calculator output as a starting hypothesis, not a fixed allowance.

Activity multipliers are coarse. A sedentary person who starts walking 8,000 steps daily may need to move from the 1.2 to 1.375 band. Track average weekly weight and adjust calories by 100 to 150 kcal if progress stalls for three weeks.

Consult a registered dietitian or physician before large deficits if you have diabetes, eating disorder history, are pregnant, or take medications affected by weight change.
